    There are probably a lot of churches around, you might try some others in the area. I assume a lot of churches have programs or would know where you might be able to find help. (not a church goer so I'm just guessing)

    You mentioned gardening, that's not going to be an immediate help but it's a good idea if for no other reason than it gets you outside and gardening is generally good for your mental health. Dollar tree has cheap seeds, a quarter a pack, but it's late in the season so I don't know how many they would have left. Libraries often also have seeds for free. You can also do things like plant sprouted potatoes, if you have a fresh tomato or pepper you can plant the seeds and you are almost guaranteed they will sprout. You can plant dried beans from the grocery store. You might not be able to garden in ground at a rental but you maybe can find cheap containers. Dollar tree, totes at the thrift store, etc. You can fill the bottom of the container with paper shreds, grass clipping, food scraps, etc and top with potting soil to save a little money. https://www.youtube.com/@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy They have a tons of totes done this way and they get a lot of production.

    Nextdoor around me is mostly lost dogs, who is shooting? and there was a car I don't recognize, that's sus right? but I see people ask for help sometimes and some of the responses are helpful. There may be someone who knows of resources in your area you might not have found yet.
    The same could be said of local facebook groups.

    Youtube is full of videos about cooking with a limited budget and sometimes the meals actually look pretty good.

    I create seed trays, pots, large buckets out of trash all the time for growing plants. If you need to mix your own soil, you can get larger bags of compost and top soil at hardware stores like Lowes for around 2 bucks, mix it up yourself. Easy to add in peat, perlite or whatever... way cheaper to buy all that stuff in large bags and mix it up. If you have your own yard, the soil in the ground is great

    And every seed I've gotten from produce I bought at the grocery store sprouts - peppers, vegs, whatever. It may be a variety that isn't suited to your area, but it works

    It does require dedication to actually get results. But it is a good way to get some time outside that is mentally refreshing
