visibilitySetting is one of either "block" (visible) or "none" (invisible).

There's some chaining going on.
First line of the function, from left to right:

document.querySelector('footer')

Selects the footer element...

.style.display

... selects the style attribute of the selected element, and then selects the display setting of the style...

= visibilitySetting;

... takes what our prior chain ended up picking (the display setting of the style of the footer element) and sets it to whatever the function dictates ("block" or "none").
