Palm and BB still had some time before Apple really crushed them. Maybe it was already too late to truly catch up to Apple, but the first iPhone wasn't that great and, other than a good UI, was definitely behind BB in capability.

iPhone 3g is when they really started to pick up steam but even then it was still AT&T exclusive. iPhone 4 was available on Verizon in Feb 2011, over 4 years after iPhone was first announced.

I don't really remember the details, and I've never been a big phone geek, but it seems like BlackBerry deciding to use that click screen may have been the nail in the coffin. I went from BB Curve to the Storm and the Storm was a piece of shit. I returned it and went back to my Curve.

A lack of apps is definitely a killer, as Microsoft has learned, but again BB had the huge first mover advantage. They could have easily had the app developers on board.

I'm more interested in the industry from a business perspective than a technological one. If you carve the market into different segments, the 'users doing whatever they want with the phone' is a tiny segment. As is people who demand the latest innovation immediately.

Most people don't even know about smartphone innovations until Apple tells them about it.
