I actually honestly believe that it should be a normal rite of passage into adulthood for a child to choose a new name when he/she becomes an adult.

Hell, women have been doing that halfway for centuries.

This is probably not going to result in a net gain in financial stability.

If you foster from any non-profit, anything that goes into spending on the animal is tax deductible. Cause technically, the animal is still part of the non-profit that has tax deductible status

You have to foster through a 501c charitable shelter or agency in order for it to be tax deductible and you have to keep all receipts for anything that you pay out of pocket. In a lot of cases the shelter will provide almost everything including food and litter and med care. Fostering is great, but sad too, because you have to give them back when they are ready to go.

It's actually really interesting how merely adopting a different name can shift your personality.

    Personality is context-sensitive like that.

But, you keep animals from being put down because the shelter is overcrowded

I agree, completely. It's kind of unfair that your name is just given to you. Becoming an adult should indeed earn you the right to define who you are in all aspects of yourself.

My boyfriend and I intend to create a new last name for ourselves if/when we get married. Not the same thing, but similar.

Society tells you to "go out there and make a name for yourself"!
But following these instructions literally as well as figuratively is met with head-scratching.
    Yup, lol.

I was there at the beginning of the month. I was expecting brisk windy fall weather and it was 80 plus degrees the whole time we were there.

Yup! That is the best part :emoji_heart_eyes_cat: and you can foster only certain ages, like kittens, or puppies, or even small animals (we still foster ferrets from time to time when needed).
We fostered a lot over the years, but when we had our daughter, we stopped until she is a bit older. I can't wait to get at it again.

Speaking of names and fostering....We got our cat Mickey from a shelter and he was being fostered by this nice woman who loved cats. She paid for some pretty expensive dental surgery before we took him home. However, we went to transfer his vet records into our name and the following conversation took place:

Me: "Hi, we just adopted this cat from <person here> and we need to change the vet records over to our name. The cat's name is Mickey"
Them: "Ok, let me pull up the file here...which Mickey?"
Me: "What do you mean, which mickey?"
Them: "Well I've got a Mickey 1 through 7 on file..."
Me: "Uhhh...the one that just had $4,000 worth of dental surgery?"
    Them: "Ah, yes, Mickey #3!"
