This song became viral when I got home from my 2nd Iraq deployment, which was March 2010. I was still in NC and read about this before I ETSd out of the Army and moved back home in May 2010. I doubt people were flooding Google with "Black Friday" searches around that time.

Just because you filled out a W-9 doesn't mean you won't get a 1099 from them. They don't necessarily have to send you a 1099 as there are thresholds to be met before they have to send one.

Anyone doing mturk or any of these self employed "work online" jobs should either take the time to find out your filing requirements or consult a CPA.

 

If you filled out a W-9, you will may receive a 1099 from the company and will burden the entirety of the tax bill for your earnings (same situation as mTurk). You're also somewhat likely to get a 1099MISC from PayPal if you meet certain thresholds which may severely complicate things because you gave one company an EIN and another your SSN.

I never said that it was discovered during the Black Friday season.

As crazy as it seems, people search for Black Friday stuff all year long.

There are affiliates I know who make solid filler $ by placing for various long-tail Black Friday terms year-round (i.e., "headphone deals black friday", or whatever), even though the actual season itself is their bread-and-butter.

The initial people who stumbled on the search results were merely enough to start a snowball.
With viral marketing, after a certain point, the snowball reaches a critical mass where it continues to grow all by itself.
Everyone wanted to share the uniquely-terrible video to get a laugh out of their friends, and so the video itself spread like a wildfire.

 

Some how I got on a call list for an Indian call center that sells (or just scams?) windows. For the last month they've been good for about 6 calls a day from random spoofed, usually local phone numbers.

These dudes, and a couple women, get so, so angry once they realize I'm fucking with them. The transformation from fake, upbeat customer service person to 13 year old xbox live player is incredible
