I've lived in New Orleans proper for about eight months, and in the area for over 20 years. It's a bit of a hassle, but I used to always recommend people play tourist on Bourbon at least once, but then make the drive to the Northshore any other time just to get away from the people and to find cheaper options. That depends on how much/what you want to drink, though. You don't want to go across the bridge drunk.
