Terrible pay. If you want to transcribe, do it off Mturk. There are companies paying more than triple what crowdsurf does.

I did a lot of those when I first started, but trust me, there are way better options for transcription online if you look around.

I haven't done them in a while, but they can be pretty reliable off-platform on slow days, especially when they've got special performance bonuses lined up (usually when they need to get the project to the client, and there's not enough people on the platform due to holidays, etc.)

Whether they're decent or not depends on the HITs that are in the queue.

Sometimes, you get a mix of clear, slow-speaking videos by universities, intended for online courses or the like.

Other times, you get distorted videos of the Texas Legislature talking literally at the speed of auctioneers.

You have to keep track of the batch size from one day to the next. As their batch goes stale, all the good HITs get picked through and you're left with only the ones that aren't worth your time. But the very day that they add more HITs (i.e., it goes from like 9,000 to 15,000), there's usually some great stuff up that's not bad filler at all.

 

@Randomacts was talking about an android app a couple days ago that notifies him on his phone when something comes up on OW Does anyone know what app that is?

 

I believe @jessers is a good source of knowledge on transcription.
