I'm picky when it comes to vehicles I come from a Jeep family. My Grampa wouldn't drive anything but Jeeps same thing with my uncle. Currently there is 2 completely restored '67 Jeepsters (I built the engine in one), A '69? Restored Commando Pickup, '63 Pug truck(awaiting resto), and a 85/86 Scrambler (Undergoing resto and custom mods).

IMO this is the only acceptable combo for that era Jeep. The 4.0 is the only thing that puts out enough to be worthy of a 4x4. If you get rid of the crappy auto hubs and go for some Warn manual hubs you can use the 4 Low gear of the Transfer case to get extra torque at the cost of a few MPG's without chipping up your tires on dry road. My brother's Jeep, the aforementioned scrambler, is getting a custom 4.0 that will be bored and stroked and multi-port injected and come out at 4.2L (I believe, I'd have to double check) but It's going to be a pretty cool truck when it is all done.
