    They can be.

    But they can be a lot cheaper than some people think:

    - Breastfeeding instead of formula,
    - Cloth diapers instead of disposable,
    (these two alone cut down on the costs considerably),
    - Used crib, toys, etc. at thrift shops,
    - You don't have to buy every single "cute outfit" you see,
    - You really didn't need to buy that $500 stroller. The $100 one would've sufficed,
    - Someone in your family might have hand-me-downs from their own kids,
    - There's quite a few obvious cost-cutting measures that I'm sure I'm missing.

    The only time it really has to be really expensive is when you've got a kid with serious disabilities / medical conditions.
    But that's not exclusive to babies. Medical expenses can be a burden for humans of any age.

    Yeah, especially when stuff they need isn't necessarily covered by insurance but they need it so you get it by whatever means necessary.
