01/08 - Monday's Meekly Mrap-Up

Mojave gets cold too during the winter! Not as cold as us up in the mountains,and certainly not freakishly cold, but they still get down to the 30s during parts of the winter. It's primarily a desert because of the lack of precipitation. It doesn't get as hot as it did in Georgia, so I'm not complaining lol.

Matt's a little southern Grinch about anything under 60, so it's been really fun for me. We're up in the mountains, so the weather is wonky AF. My town is the semi-boonies of SoCal I have to drive to Bakersfield if I want to see the glory of a Target or something.

 

ugh you make it sound so fun to be where you live. I was actually born in Decatur, Georgia but I was kidnapped by my parents to Los Angeles when I was 6 months old. I really need to get out of Los Angeles and just live anywhere else.

 

Did I miss something or is there a reason OW won't load?

I had to downgrade and it's working. Got the nice GIF @Ethraiel had running.

 

I don't trust TO ratings. They're meaningless noise. I don't even run any tools that display TO ratings anymore.

Some of my better requesters have been 1/5 TO, and I'm assuming one of the reasons they actually stay up is that poor TO rating.

A lot of people who receive rejections deserve those rejections. If the instructions were written in a manner that someone could understand, you don't deserve to be spared rejections for doing work without understanding the instructions.

For example, I caught my GF doing a HIT for Rabbit Crowdsourcing incorrectly, but she had already submitted 43 of them by the time I caught her. She'd decided to do work for them because she knew that I made a good wage with them. But she clearly didn't understand the instructions, and she later ended up receiving 43 rejections, as expected. She was upset about this and would've likely been one of the people complaining on TO about mass rejections. But really, she did it to herself.

Now, if you're the type of person who doesn't pay attention to detail and skims over instructions, TO might be a valuable tool for you. It will help you find requesters who don't care all that much about having good data (usually survey requesters asking for opinions, many of which have their hands tied by a liberal institution's core belief that anyone who works should be paid, regardless of the quality of that work).

So YMMV. But for anyone with an IQ of 100+ who wants to maximize their mTurk earnings, eliminating low-TO requesters from your search pool is throwing away money. If I see a great new requester, and you're filtering out low-TO reviews, I can block you from ever seeing them by instantly leaving a 1/5 TO review. Think about that for a moment.

Dude, LA makes me crazy. I feel ya there. I kinda wish I didn't live in the boonies, cause they overprice things in our town, but the weather is mild most of the time, so I get to roller blade in January. I count that as a win. I'm still fairly homesick tbh. I moved from the North to the South during college, but I'm a consumate East Coaster. Luckily, Scaled brings in a lot of folks from everywhere so there are a couple of New Yorkers who grew up 20 minutes from me- so I have fellow yankees to drop f bombs with and yell about bagels with.
