• The main goal of survey is for categorizing the typical and atypical portrayals of objects in advertisements. There exits two main parts in the survey:
  1. Sample questions for both atypical and typical image advertisements and explanation for eight groups of atypical portrayals of objects in advertisements.
  2. Questions that ask you to categorize the type of object portrayal found in a given advertisement image.
• In the first section, you can find two examples for image advertisements that do not contain atypical objects, the complete description for every category and four corresponding examples.
• In the second section, you can observe different images and you need to select the category or categories of images.
• Before answering to questions, please read the explanation and examine the examples for categories of atypical image advertisements.
• In the question part there are three main options for every image as follows:
  1. It does not contain any object.
  2. It contains an atypical object and you can assign it in one of the categories which have been suggested.
  3. It contains an atypical object and you can not assign it to any of suggested groups.
• You can choose more than one category for every image.
• If you choose the categories 1, 2, 3, 6 or 8 two text boxes pop up and If you choose the categories 4, 5 or 7 one text box pops up.
• If you choose the last option we ask that you describe, in freeform text, the type of atypical portrayal that you think this image exemplifies.
• You need to draw the bounding boxes in the images which contain atypical objects. The sample of bounding boxes which have been drawn by human, are shown for all the atypical image categories. You can find explanation for drawing bounding box for each of the atypical image categories.
• For drawing the bounding box, you need to select the area by dragging the mouse and after dropping the mouse a text box appears and you need to write the name of object in the bounding box.
• Our research study aims to collect data that can be used to train computer vision algorithms to understand the visual world around us much like a human can. We are particularly interested in image advertisements and the visual rhetoric they employ. This study will help us develop advanced artificial intelligence techniques for automatic understanding of image advertisements. Benefits to the participant are limited to entertainment from viewing clever advertisements, and exposure to advertisements fromseveral cultures.
• We expect reading the instructions will take 15 minutes, and doing the task will take 15 min, and that our payment is based on the assumption that each worker completes at least 10 tasks and only reads the text once.
• Participation is voluntary and you can withdraw from the study at any time. You will only receive compensation if you complete the study. You can see the payment amount per task in the box above. This task is restricted to individuals with 98% approval rate on MTurk, to ensure the quality of our data.
• We will not collect any personal information about you. Your data is completely anonymous.
• There are no significant risks associated with participating in this study. However, some images might be considered offensive or disturbing by some participants. Note that these are advertisement images which have been created for wide public viewing.
