Its not just one shitty article off a reddit post. There is a group of thousands of researchers it was shared with & has been proliferated around, and it was backed up by the two most "prominent" worker community figureheads, and then you have competing platforms blasting MTurk over it to all those people for weeks now as well. I mean legit petty AF potshots just so they can make a few extra bucks. When I say eff Prolific I mean it, they're all outright scumbags from my observations. But still, you've got requesters, workers, & competition all saying "yupp, mturk is trash filled with bots no surprises there" - what do you think someone reading all that is gonna think?

The sheer # of people actually having their accounts nuked recently is unlike anything I've seen in the last 2yrs turking. Yeah you'd have the occasional dumbass who scammed barcodes & got diedededed, but between here/mtc/subreddit its been wave after wave of people.

There are a lot of requesters who are going through the back log of data, really looking at it, and going "this is garbage" - if y'all don't think people have been scamming the shit out of Joe for the last 8 months you're just living in fantasy land. At some point it was always going to hit a balance where there were more people scamming his HITs than doing them properly because - as these things go - scamming is easier & can be done more than you can submit good data. Ofc he has had the ability to QC his stuff - as have all these researchers who just straight up decided not to - but this is a lot of chickens coming home to roost at once.

Personally I think its fine overall btw. There are going to be some sad folks caught in the crossfire, but looking at some of the bans its so ridiculously obvious MTurk has had a stolen account problem for a while now.

The best thing any of us can do is reach out to these folks. When you see a reCAPTCHA in a survey, hit them up & say hi. Invite them to TV / etc. You've got people worried the other end isn't human, hand them the human side of it all. I know I've had a RIDICULOUS increase in the # of req profiles being claimed lately, its pretty obvious both sides want that gap bridged where they can know both sides are legit & its the best avenue we've got atm. I'm loathe to recommend it, but TurkPrime also really does good work verifying accounts aren't scamming, and they are miles better for us than Prolific/TestableVampires as far as taking a piece of the pie.
