You can pry my microwave from my cold, dead claws woman! ;)

But, I definitely relate. It's not corny at all. It puts a lot of things in perspective when you deal with something that life altering. The fact we are all still around and have our loved ones around to have something to complain about is better than being in the ground. Matt's been a viciously difficult person to take care of, but he's still here and the fact he broke part of his back and can still hobble around is pretty amazing. I hurl my guts out and faint like a goat, but it's not the end of the world lol. It's sucky, but you get can used to almost anything and find a way to enjoy life anyway. I've lived to see another sunset, even if I've ran into bears and rattlesnakes and almost slipped off a rock ledge (all my fears in life!). The fact I can still do that stuff makes life worth living, even if I'll be paying off medical debt forever.

When I moved to the U.S., this stuff blew my mind. A few years later my wife and I wanted to start a family. I deliberately chose to take a significant ("significant") pay cut to move to a job where the benefits were much better, including health insurance. Having seen some of the absurd billing that can happen, I don't regret it at all.

I love the support we find in total strangers. it really does make the tedious stuff and the rotten stuff seem so much smaller. the social worker in me is all touched now.

That was a factor for Matt too, and not really for himself (cause up until now, his only other big healthcare issue was needing plates in his arms from a dirtbike accident years and years ago) but for me. Space-X pays better but wanted him to work more hours (by a lot, they have a madatory 90-110 hour work week for most of the design and launch engineers...lol no) and then this company offered him a lower salary, but benefits for both of us (and even his benefits without me were much better than what space-x offered). Since his compay pays the premium, I'm saving a lot of money (like 5k+ a year easily) because now I have vision, dental, and health insurance and it's a much better policy than I had before. My out of pocket was twice as much before and I was paying a huge chunk of my salary towards the premium and I didn't have dental or vision for a few years. My health is much better now than before, but the maintenance costs of the specialists and inhalers and the meds and the few times a year I have to go in for fluids and stuff...it's insanely expensive without a good policy. I very much appreciate that he cared about my needs as well as his at the time, cause my healthcare this year has been so much cheaper than it had been for awhile. I actually had some money to spend on myself for once and I can see nicer specialists without having to pay out of pocket like I was for awhile. It's a good bit less stressful.

Matt has 2 hours mandatory OT a day right now, tho they usually don't. The launch is way behind schedule tho, so it has to get done. On the upside, they are paying them for the OT hours (which they normally wouldn't for a salaried job, but the company wants things done on time badly enough they are bribing them lol) but everyone is there most days and it definitely wore Matt down (not shocking he fell asleep driving).

Luckily, things will slow down once launch happens and there is a nice bonus involved as long as it doesn't literally crash and burn. But for now, he's really worn out working so much on top of PT and recovering. He loves his job at least. Loves it a looooot. Half the reason he turned down Space-X was just the terrible way they treat employees. There are a ton of former space-x folks at his company that got burnt out by the way they were treated and his company does a lot to make their little brain factories happy.

Well, the dirtbike accident wasn't remotely his fault. He was in the middle of a race and some total idiot went the wrong way on the track and crashed into him mid jump, and he couldn't have seen the other guy coming from his direction. The family ended up having to settle with him in court because it was such a fuck up on the other guy's part. That's part of the reason he decided against racing with sponsorships anymore tho, he didn't want to end up breaking his back or something like a lot of the pros do eventually and he's much more low key now than he used to be.

I could never keep him off two wheels (or wings) tho. He's gonna end up rolling straight off a cliff some day and I've just accepted that. He's a high octane guy with only high speed hobbies and I've always know that. It's morbid, but he has life insurance and money set aside, in case he really does end up dead from a high risk hobby of his, specifically meant for me. I hope I never have to cash that stuff out, but I'm not gonna stop him from living the life that makes him happy.

Story of my life here. Matt: above average at anything that involves athleticism or coordination, homecoming king, annoyingly charming, wildly lucky, and somehow also good at math and science because of course.
