I remember the first time I pet a bunny. I was 5 and we "adopt" her through our garden. One day, while I am feeding her, she bite my finger for no reason. I had to take lots of rabies and tetanus shots after the biting. One month later, we had the soup of her.

 

Some ash hole just tried to pull a scam on my grandma. Pretending to be a lawyer and saying my cousin was in jail and needed four thousand dollars to make bail. Her caretaker only works a half day, so she had left already and I usually go over there around four, which means this guy got lucky that no one was there when he called. Luckily, I have my name on all her bank accounts and have alerts setup. I get a message saying her account just had a withdrawal of $4000. I'm thinking, 'How the fuck did that happen?' My grandma can't even drive and my parents are in Raleigh helping my uncle with a bunch of recovery stuff, so...? Grandma doesn't answer the phone, so I call the bank to freeze the account and drive to her house. I get there and a cab is dropping her off. The guy running the scam called a cab for her. I guess I'm just lucky it was a real cab and not some fake bullshit, so now I'm pretty scared. She was gonna put the cash into some envelopes and a courier would come pick them up, which he tried to do because I was there when he showed up. He wasn't part of the scam, so he gave me the name and address the envelopes were going. It's New Jersey, because why wouldn't it be going to some shithole like New Jersey?

Honestly, I thought my grandma was doing okay being alone for a few hours a day, but now I'm thinking I may have to up the caretaker to full time. This shit comes at you fast. She was okay by herself most the day just a few months ago and now I'm already at the point of round the clock care. Thought it would be a little more gradual. Also, want to go all Liam Neeson on these people. My ex-wife is a State Dept. attorney and doesn't hate me enough that I couldn't call in a favor. I'm sure she could find these assholes.

God, I hope not. I'm just freaked out that they got her into a cab. It could have been some guy just taking all her money and dumping her off somewhere or worse.

Someone actually pulled that shit on my other grandma when she was still alive. Did the 'call from the bank and we need to verify your info' one. Because the bank doesn't have your info already, right? My mom got the money back thankfully.

Getting my name on her accounts is probably the smartest thing I've done. It's just crazy how fast she's slid. You never really think it will come at you that quickly. Like six months from perfectly okay to partially continent.

Ok, first thing to do before dealing with those guys, deal with your grandma. She is scared and probably feeling awful about the situation. Tell her that those bastards are always around, recently more of them, and tell her that this is OK. She should not feel sorry and most importantly alone. Even lie about that. Tell her that even your friend was giving money for those kind of people. Those bastards are professional, anyone can be easily fooled. Old people can easily shut themselves out of real world after these kinds of scams.
