    Anyone who is part of a "different" group will seem like jerks to outsiders. It's easy to justify thinking negatively about a person when you're not really part of their group or know them well. It's easy to spread negativity about people in group A among people of group C, especially if there's no significant overlap. I've noticed that people would rather readily believe negative rumors they've heard about people without a single shred of proof if you force it hard enough. Some people are nasty and spiteful creatures.
