1. That is a very real question. Where I grew up older women in my community would indeed cut their hair real short and then hang out at the beauty shop underneath dome dryers. My guess it was just the best way for them to socialize.

in your 40's and sometimes younger, hair can get really tangly, frizzy, and longer hair can cause really bad headaches even for people who don't usually get headaches. long hair can be kept, but it goes from easy to much harder to manage. source: me.

also a bunch of it falls out. so ponytail holders and barrettes breaking off hair causes worrying about whether it will grow back.

I'll be honest, trendy haircuts or obvious lots of time spent hairstyles are trumped by just a natural letting hair do its thing look IMO.

Messy hair looks best. Quit showering. Disregard hygiene
