My life has been a lot of climbing towards the upper 2/3 of this ladder, sliding down to the bottom, and repeating.

 

I've learned the ladder is very subjective and pharmacists who make triple what I do considers themselves middle class, when I consider myself middle class

Earnings are not necessarily linked to social influence.

For example, an assistant manager at a fast food restaurant makes barely more than minimum wage, but has major influence over the lives of several individuals when they make the schedule for those individuals, enact policy, hold meetings, assign daily tasks, etc.

A junior web developer, on the other hand, is at the bottom of the social hierarchy in that microcosm, but makes much more money than our lowly assistant manager.
