    I do not believe it affects CA (edit: mturk workers) workers. We can prove we are independent contractors. This bill was meant to stop companies from claiming workers were ICs when, under the definitions, they are actually employees.

    We have substantial control over how, when, where, and the mechanisms we use to complete this work. The work we do is also substantially different from the people who pay us (e.g., universities, Google, grad students, etc.).

    When it first came out I looked into this further as we have to ensure we don't accidentally treat someone in our business as an IC when they should be an employee (or we will get heavily fined and nailed for worker's comp which is not cheap) and so far all the criteria we use in my desk job to ensure that every vendor we hire is, legally, an IC still hold up with this new law.

    Of course, I'm not a lawyer and there could be a loophole I am unaware of, but from everything I've seen and everyone I've spoken to, mturk workers are still independent contractors.

    Tons of instructions, a long comprehension quiz, numerous bot checks, 50/50 split on that high bonus. This is not a one question task. Also, the $2 referred to is 50 cent award, with a $1.50 bonus on completion

    Not a lawyer, cannot see how any reasonable interpretation of AB5 could be applied to MTurk itself.

    You could make a case for it applying to individual requesters who use MTurk to power their entire business model, but GL figuring out how to apply it since they can just put Location Not: US-CA to their HITs & be done with it.

    You object to being classified as an independent contractor for this work?

    It would be horrible, and devastating, if we were called employees. I would argue that Mturk would probably shut down if that happened.
