    It's a virtual machine in which you can run a different operating system. So it's like a make believe different computer that you run on your own computer.

    @moonshay76 depending on how technical you need to get, it's an abstraction layer that effectively uncouples your OS from your hardware. That includes not only the processors but also the storage, etc.

    Basically you section off a piece of your harddrive. Then you boot it and it acts like it's own computer. You then have to install an OS on it and then finally you can work in it just like it was it's own computer.

    Umm. What are you supposed to be accomplishing with this download? Is your teacher providing you an image? This could be something that's handy for class. Your teacher provides a file that represents an abstracted computer, and you can then load it in (say) VMWare Player. That basically gives you a safe little sandbox to do your hacking inside.
