If you don't need to move the work area around with you for some reason a desktop will be better. The people suggesting the cheap laptops likely don't understand how important having a bunch of monitors is for working as well. While yes laptops can output to other displays it often caps out to 2 extra displays unless they have display port daisy chaining, but either way the desktop will be easier for that.

Now the question is if you are comfortable building a computer or if you will want a prebuilt. Prebuilts are fine and you could always slap a better graphics card in later if you need it unlike on a laptop as long as the power supply can support it and if it can't you can always get a replacement powersupply and install that for fairly cheap. (Don't just buy a random crap power supplies though.. do some research or ask someone before that)

If you only have an HDMI port you are going to be SOL most likely.

What type of usb does your laptop have though? If it has usb 3.0 then you could get one of those overpriced usb 3.0 to video things that sort of work... but as far as HDMI goes you can't daisychain it like you can with display port.

The thing for me is while I know I will use a 3rd monitor (I am actively looking for a 3rd monitor that is on sale that I like) it will only slightly help me with work. All that will change is that I will have a dedicated monitor for a work or game instead of working + audio stuff. Being able to have a dedicated monitor for youtube or whatever is what I want though.

I think I would be better of buying a prebuilt at this time then trying tobuild my own but I would love to do that some day

Is there a bonus with it? 0.20 for 5 min isn't great pay.

 

Building is really easy but if you want to get a prebuilt the budget office stuff is honestly the only price range that prebuilts make sense.. Prebuilt Gaming PCs are overpriced most of the time but budget stuff is decent if you consider that they come with a windows key that you would have had to pay ~$100 for.

 

That's not necessarily true. I have a cheap and a higher end laptop and they both support HDMI and Display port. Three screens (including the laptop screen which is considerably bigger on the cheap one) should be more than enough for the average user.
