The overwhelming majority of research polls and surveys are designed by some dumb undergrad, usually unintentionally biased, and then manipulated by an academic adviser or doctoral candidate with an axe to grind to produce whatever result will look best in a dissertation.

 

That's how I look at it but now they can say "X% of people use religion for guidance in their day to day life" and anyone who reads about the results without reading through the entire study (like most people) is going to have the wrong idea. I'm always skeptical of studies before I check the methods they used myself. I'm no expert at all but the number of poorly done studies out there is ridiculous. Either way, I think the problem most of the time is not what the researchers claim, but how people who are looking for something to prove (and sensational publications) interpret it.

I’ve been turking for 13 months and I saw folks dropping their Sunday weekly total emails and I felt like I’m either not working smart or hard enough or I didn’t know something that the mturk elite know that I don’t. Sorry for venting..I felt like Vegeta when he found out Goku turned super Saiyan for the first time...
