I just looked at the cost of living there and uhm, whoo! Yeah, that's not cheap compared to living in the SE. If you're used to cali, that's one thing, but like...WHEW NO. I almost peed my pants when we moved here. It reminded me of growing up and not the last decade of living in the SE. Kern County isn't expensive for cali, but it's still wayyyy higher than what is rational.

Kern County is the Alabammer of California. It's a good balance of what Matt and I want, since he's a southern boy and I'm a prissy Long Islander.
