Nah. Not even close. It was the hubs turn the night before, but he just couldn't sleep. I was having issues with my allergies so that makes me snore, so in addition to cursing the world, he sang Greenday songs to the rhythm of my snores, got tired of that and started dramatically changing positions in the bed, and gave up and eventually fell asleep mad. I was laughing my ass off listening to him tell me about all that.

 

My kid is just as brilliant when it comes to listening. lmao

The thermic effect of a frozen confection is essentially negligible when compared to the energy density of the confection. On freezing, the specific heat of any substance containing water significantly decreases. The measurement of thermic effect and specific heat change in a frozen confection is complicated, as digestion causes a continuous phase change from water ice to body core temperature water, but the latent heat of fusion for a frozen food can be estimated reliably from the water fraction of the food (here the solute concentration can be ignored when considering the cooling load as the concentration in food is generally quite low). Another consideration is the thermal conductivity of water ice is roughly four times greater than liquid water, with only half the specific heat; necessarily the thermal diffusivity of a water ice is roughly eight times higher than unfrozen water. As a model, ice cream can be considered to be roughly 86% water ice by volume.

Consequently, the initial mastication and gastral phase of digestion exposes the frozen food substance at its peak of thermal conductivity to the broad and vascular structures of the mouth and throat, rapidly chilling these surfaces as the food product is consumed. Following peristalsis, a significant portion of water ice remains in the stomach, which rapidly undergoes a phase change to liquid water, further cooling the gastrointestinal tract. The sum of these two effects, although negligible compared to the available food energy, causes the body to attempt to compensate for the perceived rapid cooling, and the core temperature increases. Often this is followed by a cooling of the extremities, as arterial constriction reduces blood flow, often compounding the perceived cooling effect of a frozen confection experienced by holding the confection in the hand.

This first wave of warming increases core body temperature at the expense of the extremities; combined with the cold sensation in the mouth and the beginning of the rehydration effect from the water content of the confection, a cooling sensation is typically experienced by the consumer of the frozen food. However, the spike in core temperature overwhelms the small thermic effect described above causing arterial dilation and a return to normal body temperature. Following this, the now warmed fat and sugar content of the frozen confection are digested, liberating the stored energy for use. Consuming a kilogram of ice cream would require an expenditure of only ~240 kcals to bring to body temperature, while providing ~2,000 kcals in food energy (or, a more modest 1 cup serving, 36 kcals and 300 kcals, respectively). Additionally, the sudden increase in blood sugar, combined with the typically positive association with frozen confection consumption leads to increased positive affect, which may serve as a form of self-medicating in response to commonly experienced mild seasonal depression.
