God that brings back memories of boot camp. I can attest to this being an effective way to get people out of their bed.

 

When that didn't work when I was working at a boy scout camp, we woke the staff up with "caveman revelle" which was an aluminium cot end pole and a steel trashcan lid. Makes an awful racket.

My RDC's like to throw metal trash cans down the barracks to wake us up at random times of the night. I imagine they made a similar sound.
