When we bought our first house, the very nice young lady happily told me at the beginning to take as much time as I wanted to read through the mortgage documents. I said thanks, I will!

I did. When it started to sink in that I really was going to read everything, her happiness visibly cooled. When I started asking questions about specific clauses, that's when she really lost her ability to keep faking her smile. She was not very happy by the end of that session.

Fast forward to the closing documents and I got the same encouragement. I did read through everything, again. Just as well, I found some mistakes which were easy to fix but had the potential to cause a lot of problems down the road. (I'm told that checking the box for "yes I'm a USA citizen" on paperwork involving very large sums of money when you're really not is kind of frowned upon.)

I once refused to sign refinance paperwork until the bank could give me a satisfactory answer as to what a specific clause meant. They were pissed as hell because they couldn't actually tell me what it meant. "Honestly, it's a standard phrase, it's in all our paperwork." Me: "then you really should be able to explain it to me, and as it's the end of your business hours I'm going to leave and will come back tomorrow with the expectation you will have an answer for me".

I am generally a pretty easy-going guy, but when it comes to signing paperwork for cars or houses that is major money and if I don't understand something then I won't sign until I figure out what it means.

I signed everything "Dan" - as is my standard signature, instead of "Daniel" and had to go through and add an "iel" to everything lol.

 

My favorite is catching typos and badly used grammar and hearing the person who's "been doing this for years" say "oh my, I've never noticed that". So how many people have you help refinance their "cat" instead of their "car" Sally? How many?
