What I mean is not every finger lift up and retouch is a click. And that's where tap to click fails

You realize that a lot of them have physical buttons UNDER the trackpad right?

Yeah but it's such an inefficient place to put them. Poor product design. Having them right below the spacebar makes way more sense that way you don't have to lift your hands off the keyboard you can just click with your thumb.

I'm probably just going to buy another ThinkPad. Lol

There was a point that thinkpads also ditched it but I believe that the buttons are back on the newer ones.

Mine doesn't have the physical buttons (you can still press the whole corner of the trackpad down), but my tap to click doesn't misfire on me. I mean, it's still terrible compared to a mouse and keyboard. But I haven't had that frustration. And the multi-touch functions are actually pretty handy. :dunno:

Yeah I know they ditch them on some models but kept them on other models.

Yeah that is what I'm saying. There isn't a huge market for what he wants because the recent implementation no longer sucks.

Multi-touch still exists on ones with physical buttons though. my 2011 ThinkPad has it even. I just really like physical buttons above the trackpad. Old dog new tricks thimg whatever

We aren't talking about multi-touch. Trackpads have physical clicks built in.

I was responding to Darengel in regard to the multifinger gestures and stuff. My current laptop has the button built into the touchpad you can push down on the entire touchpad to physically click. But that still requires taking your fingers off the keyboard which is pretty lame

A cumbersome and awkward solution when physical buttons above a trackpad is way more efficient and a far better user experience

It isn't cumbersome. It is literally the same as physical buttons.

I've been reading this interaction and I'm just as confused as you are. How does having the buttons right below the keyboard make it easier? Wouldn't you still have to move the pointer to wherever you want to click....thus you have to move your fingers anyways?

Early generations of physical buttons built into trackpads sucked. I'm 99% sure that Dan just hasn't ever used one that didn't suck.

Do you know how you can press your space bar with your thumb and requires very minimal motion? Imagine doing that same minor minimal motion to click as well.
