The most common comparison is to Jewish Halloween in that most children celebrate by dressing in costumes, but they're usually of the biblical nature. Basically, it's a celebration over the fact that someone wants to annihilate the Jews, and we survived (this is a running theme throughout Judaism). Haman is the villan, we eat triangle cookies that represent his hat, and we are commanded to get so drunk we forget his name. We also have to boo like crazy whenever his name is mentioned. It was the first Jewish holiday I celebrated and it's a heck of a lot of fun. Tonight's the first time I'm going to an actual party with booze, so I plan to do the mitzvah 100%.
