Unfortunately, for my study (as you will soon see), the pre-qualification HITs are necessary. We can't risk any participants that don't speak English fluently since they are required to communicate with a partner for the duration of the study. So if only one participant is a non-English speaker or is low-effort (just answering randomly), then we waste two participants, since we have to throw away the data for the pair, rather than the individual. So for every participant we fail to pre-screen, we lose around $30.00.
On the issue of fairness, I have created a compensation HIT for you to deal with the price update. Hopefully the payment from the actual study (and future studies in our lab, which you are now pre-qualified for) will also act as compensation.
