Paying the 1% to principle means less mortgage interest amortized over the life of the loan. Paying just $50 extra on a mortgage over the lifetime of a loan can make a huge difference in total interest paid over 30 years. And I plan to pay my house off.

Couldn't you just use run a formula to calculate your cash back from 2% and throw that all into your mortgage instead of it being done automatically? I mean that is more work but I don't believe that it matters.

 

Yep. This. I want the cash back to earn a little more for me. Once I unbury myself from the leftover medical/braces balances (braces are paid off, technically, except for what I put on a non interest credit card because...no interest...) I am going to pay down the student loan, then tackle the rest of my mortgage.

So basically it is more that it is easier to do it this way and I won't doubt that. But yes it is always good to pay back those loans ASAP.

Yes. I could. I mentioned that I could do that. But then I'd have to track it and do it timely, and request a payout, then deposit it into checking, then transfer to the mortgage.

I like it being done every $25 automatically as it's JUST DONE and I get the immediate benefit of less interest and I am not kicking myself for taking three more weeks to get that taken care of. Over time, the delay in getting it paid to the mortgage principle can erode the additional benefit.

I'd LOVE to have all the free time in the world to track all of this, but I don't, so I have a lot of things set up to do automatically and I end up coming out ahead in the long run.

(I also obsessively save money and that's all done automatically, too...)

Once I can retire I'm going to be a guru at all of this, though and play that money game a little better.

 

It is prob worth mentioning that finances aren't 100% what is always mathematically the best but what is easy and good enough.

But for everyone else don't get credit card debt and you are prob doing okay for the most part.
