I've always microwaved mine too, but not sure if I was told to at some point or what because I never researched to see if it really helps or not. However, I don't have a compost bin anymore so I just toss it when I'm done with it.

You might when you get your first case of food poisoning, or your kid does.

Also, my bff's kid nearly died when she was two due to nasty shit that comes from food. We think that was picked up on a shopping cart handle though.

Scared the bejeezers out of me and I've been a wee bit paranoid ever since.

Also, as a side note, microwaving it removes the nauseating stink sponges can get so there is that pleasant reward.
