looks like i don't have mobile hotspot on my phone plan so i can't try this out, but thank you for the suggestion!

it shows up in devices but it's not under network>connections like it is usually. i'm not only not picking up MY wifi network, but i don't see ANY (can usually see all my neighbors'). laptop is less than 2 years old but i might try to do that. thanks!!
