They've made all kinds of changes for this year due to the situation. I believe it's all open book and free response - multiple choice questions are out, at least for AP Physics. My daughter was talking about this over the weekend. AP US History is all DBQ (I had to look that up, "document based questions"). She gets several documents and has to write a response that refers to those documents, but also shows she has some outside knowledge of the context.

And I think there are time limits? So you kind of have to know the stuff to write something comprehensive in the time limit.

In grad school the test you had to take to graduate was essays...and open book really...but a time limit was applied. You knew the subjects, but not the questions, and if you hadn't studied your ass off ahead of time there was no way you could take the test and cite sources and pass that exam.

Yep, exactly that.

I'm doing a little reading now that I've gotten curious about it, and one of the security measures they're putting in place is they'll be releasing AP exams to teachers so they can give feedback about whether little Johnny has done suspiciously well on his AP exam after struggling all year. And then the College Board is also going to use plagiarism detection software and so on to try and detect if there's anything awry.

But this kind of makes sense to me. Most of my education was science based, and it didn't matter how many books and formula sheets you had; if you didn't know how to apply the formulas, you were going to fail.

I did AP statistics in high school, and it was a class that apparently my teacher thought I spent most of the time goofing off in. He offered that if anyone got a 5 on their AP test over the summer he would take those that got that score to a free dinner as a group. I got a 5, and when he was talking about how well we all did he turned to me and said he was quite surprised I got a 5.

Typing that all out that sounds rude, but to be frank I was also surprised and it was said in good spirits.

I have since gone out into the world and remembered very little of that knowledge and used none of it. But I did indeed get that 5.

- "Creative" writing exercise (list types of X), 3 minute timer
- Unskippable 2:13 video that was truly unnecessary. No one needs a video explanation of tangrams, especially 2 minutes of it, ESPECIALLY when it had crap-all to do with the survey (you're never asked to actually solve any). Without it, this would have paid a decent $16+/hr.
