I get you 100% in some cases. BUT - simply saying it doesn't make it true in every instance, and there are some notable instances where it being incorrect is super duper important.

Running a study across a huge representative sample of the US costs $600,000 through more traditional methods

That same exact study, which replicates 87%, cost less than $20,000 on MTurk.

That's an actual real world example, not just made up random #s and there is a huge acceptable range within the gap between those two numbers where you do really well for yourself without losing work to the (on top of more costly version) more time consuming, hassle inducing, and headache version of the options There is also still over 2x the current available academic work on the platform worth of market share to argue/fight over with nothing even remotely close of a framework built like MTurk completely ignoring actual business outsourcing opportunities.

Sure in some cases you're correct no arguments here. ScoutIt's business model cannot exist on the basis of a US workforce. It simply doesn't work and that's fine, realistically it makes no difference to a US worker if they exist or not though IMO. In other cases, like VRAPI, even if their business model can exist on a fair contractor's wage (which is in the 50-250/hr range) they'll simply reduce cost because they can. Fuck'em.

So yes... There are definitely cases you can't win. I hate to be the debbie downer but everyone worried about outsourcing to 3rd world countries is blind as a bat. What will happen is that the US prison system will offer real, honest to God Americans who can actually work for 50c/hr and be doing amazing for themselves in comparison to their current 15-33c/hr wages. People on Twitter will whine, no one will care. While probably far less educated than the average they still have higher english comprehension & fewer cultural differences. ML researchers are starting to realize in many cases they cannot actually ask an Indian to tag their data and have it be useful, there may be some gap time where they drop in and offer a few folks a decent wage to come do it (Pinterest is a good example, they cannot build their platform/datasets off Indians, it wont work b/c they are a culturally based business), but you'll probably lose most of it eventually to some enterprising labor camp in Alabama lmao.

Still though, thankfully there are areas that are insulated from most of the actual dirt cheap options and they do offer avenues for really profitable increases in your end of day $ pool. I just hope folks who clawed their asses to the top of MTurk keep pushing up is all ilu

Definitely fully agree that any 3rd party coming in to try and enforce standardized wages is a smelly ass idea. Foooooork that. GTFO. btw the TO folks are trying to do exactly that, gl!
