My kids are all grown up so it is hard to heart whore them but my daughter turns 21 today. She is in her second go around of college after her first one shut down with one class to go and also working two jobs, so Dave and I insisted she take the day off from everything and are taking her out to dinner tonight.

Dont get a big bulky window ac. Get a portable ac. They are units that you can move around on the floor and have twin hoses (the good ones do) that mount in a slim vent in the window.

Huh, I've never seen one of these before.. what's the downsides of this vs a window unit? It still has to vent outside I assume?

If you are going to get a window unit get one with a high SEER

 

Depends on the size of the room... I had a 5k BTU for a 12x12ft room and it worked really well. I think 5000 should be the minimum you consider.

Yeah but you can easily remove it when you want and they are barely visible outside. also, for winter, just remove and roll into a closet

 

You have to make sure you get one with twin vents and that blows the moisture outside instead of having to keep a bucket for drainage. I have one in my bedroom and one in the den

I would get at least a 10,000 BTU. That's also about the most a 10 amp circuit can handle

 

We had an ancient one at the PD I used to work at, and the main downside was having to empty the water out. It had a big tub inside that would collect the water, it was super heavy to take out and if you forgot, it'd overflow and make a huge mess. I think they have ones now that automatically vent the water though.
