Asking a serious question here, is something like protonmail really safer? meaning, do they do something that others are not that truly keeps you secure? My Uni email was compromised and I deal with legislators, they don't really like it when emails leak out. But I'm also at a loss as to what a good alternative is. I mean if a congressperson is going to send something via gmail anyhow, I can try to protect data all day long but their end is wide open to being compromised, at least I think it would be. I suppose I could just do my due diligence to ensure my end is as secure as possible.

Your uni mail prob didn't have the best security in the world if they rolled their own instead of using google's edu thing. Protonmail to my understanding is pretty good but you will want to check audits if you are worried.
