    Are you/hubby installing it like, in the walls, etc? I wired my own house myself, cat6 is what I see most recommended for DIY'ers. Cost effective, less headache to wire the ports than cat7, and beefy enough for the vast majority of users.

    Though if you're paying someone else to do it.. :ham:

    Explain it like I'm 5: The newer cables are rated for faster speeds.

    Anything cat5e or newer will be able to do gigabit and that is fast enough for most people but technically the rating is actually for a rating how long the cable can be for the speed.

    Cat 6 and newer can do 10gigabit (but the rest of your networking gear needs to be compatible)

    If you are wiring for a house just use whatever the newest standard is. Although they are getting a bit more annoying to run with the cables being a bit stiffer but meh.

    cat7 isn't really any harder to patch than cat6 but cat5e easier... but also old now.

    Network Engineer here!

    Use cat6. cat7 is way overkill and will probably be more expensive/useless for a home environment. Cat 5e is probably all you're going to need, honestly, but cat6 gets you a little bit of forwards compatibility.
