I live near Chicago but in Indiana. Indiana was voted the second worst state to grow old in recently, second to West Virginia. It's alright though honestly, there's a lot of people. Also, it seems to vary from place to place. I've had expensive utilities in this same area before too. donno what the deal is.

 

Pretty much my entire experience with Indiana was Indianapolis when I was younger, and Elkhart a little under two years ago to buy a car. I didn't have any bad impressions.

My county had the largest population loss as % of total population between the 2000 and 2010 census, so while prices may be rock bottom in some respects, it's a dying area. I'm hoping to get out sooner than later.

 

Obvs not water or sewage utilities though

 

Elkhart is really starting to boom now because of their RV production industry. There's good jobs everywhere over there right now. That's actually relatively close to where I live. I live in a yuppy college kid town with 12 dollar tacos.

 

That's where I grew up.

The core of South Bend is very much a yuppy college kid town bc of notre dame.

What they don't tell you is that it is surrounded in FOUR of the worst hoods around here. Like cops die every other week out there.

 

Elkhart is the closest I've ever come to South Bend, but I took an Amtrak out there alone back in September 2016 with $7,000 in cash strapped to my thigh. The dude at the dealership -- this tiny Hispanic man that spoke in a quite heavy accent -- was all "What the fuck is wrong with you? Why would you travel with cash?" and I'm all like "Dude you said you wanted cash only". He's like "You could've hit an ATM here" and well, that's not how ATM limits work.
