At least they straight up admit that they don't want to pay you. If they couldn't afford to pay for every hit they had posted, they wouldn't have been able to post them in the first place. Sounds like they asked for a refund and pocketed the excess.

 

Fair, but the people doing the guessing are a heck of a lot more educated than I am, so it's acceptable until I start Googling my symptoms and coming at them with WebMD printouts.

They do have to pay for any reversed rejections, that is true. As for their budget, they have to have the money in their account to pay for all the hits before they're posted. They might mean that some of the data was unusable and they're going to have to post (and pay for) more hits, so they can't afford to pay for data they won't use.

 

I'm really hoping this $3 hit gets canceled and they give me $3 for waiting 15 minutes

Here are the messages I got from him:

Hi,
Thanks for reaching out and sorry about the rejection. In order to verify that the annotators truly understand our instructions and take careful consideration before annotating, we insert some pieces of official and widely-recognized data (both in sentiment and naturalness) from standard NLP datasets. To keep fair, we have also invited several students in our university to test and they all got 90% correct on these specific "probes".

If we find that you do not pass 90% of these standard data, our program members will further inspect your annotations and decide to reject part of your annotations. If you still find it unfair and unethical, please let us know.

I am checking more details with my collaborators, but we do not make rejections based on "naturalness" only. Actually our rejection system lays much more emphasis on the judgments of sentiment (i.e., positive or negative). Hope that helps.
