If you've used any online tax sites, might want to change any login stuff there. My dad got identity thefted a few years ago. He thought it was all cleared up until tax season rolled around. They had filed a fake return for him and gotten a very large refund that he was initially on the hook for.

Is this a good time to remind everyone that they should be using 2FA whenever they can and you should be using a password manager like keepass so that you have strong unique passwords for everything?

(Also TIL that amazon has 2 factor I guess so I'll be switching that on)

Anyone happen to know if you still need to login multiple times a day if you use 2factor for amazon?

I would assume that the timeout is still 10 hours.

If that malcreant caitiff starts going ape on your accounts it can cause you a HUGE amount of trouble for the rest of your "credit life" ... :( Trust me!!! Been There and still living the saga ... Someone got hold of a blank check from an account that we had closed some years earlier while we were living in South Korea and commenced to have some checks printed up. A few years after we came back stateside this gal decides to go on a spending spree during the holidays and starts writing checks to every Fred Meyer she could get to. She even made up a "fake" Washington drivers license number for me but made a critical error in how the month is shown. Fred Meyer down in Portland Oregon called my other half and asked him if I was in Portland shopping. He looked at me and said "Hey Honey! Are you down at the Portland Oregon Fred Meyer right now?" "I don't think so? I must be having an out of body experience". Needless to say the security people at the Portland Oregon Fred Meyer had detained the gal and she had all kinds of fake IDs, credit cards, etc in MY name! It was living nightmare since 2001... and it still pops up from time to time, but at least we did all the right things, Police Reports, Letters to the Credit Reporting Agencies, Letters to all our credit card folks etc etc etc. Be prepared to do a lot of work this next few days, weeks, months if needed ... So Sorry for you!!!

I looked into using keepass or something similar, but felt like it was going to be a hassle going to another program and copy/pasting every time I needed to login to something. Maybe I should check it out again.

I used KeePass for a while, but switched over to LastPass since that has mobile apps & autofill

The netsec guy in me won't trust lastpass but it SHOULD be fine. ..

If you are okay with trusting a company with your password vault and possibly having them charge monthly in the future lastpass would solve that... but keepass is better imho as it is stored locally or however you store it yourself.

Also keepass is open source.. :)

Edit: If you are curious to why I won't trust lastpass anymore even if they have been fine so far

Write your passwords down in a notebook just in case of terminal hard drive syndrome either way.

I use both Keepass and Lastpass. Keepass for stuff I care about, that I'll bother to look up if I can't remember [banks, credit cards] and lastpass for stuff that doesn't matter at all [THE WRONG HUB, turkerhub]. Lastpass is pretty convenient; all browser autofill is very, very insecure.

I'm not sure if I'm offended by the beginning of the sentence or proud to be in such good company.

lol I don't think people are going to lose their minds if something bad happens to our TH account.. mostly because you would prob fix it fairly quickly.

But yeah auto fill isn't secure... you can make a website that says it is website X and lastpass will give the password.

    https://labs.detectify.com/2016/07/27/how-i-made-lastpass-give-me-all-your-passwords/

Like I said though I don't really trust lastpass but it is better then having weak passwords most likely. :dunno:
