We had a straight-up infestation here for a long time. Like...bad. I actually partnered with the local shelter and they brought me like 10 traps to catch them. I'm glad to say that 99% of them found homes eventually. I remember going to the trashcan one night and there were like 20-25 cats just...sitting in the middle of the road.

They can have kittens so fast that it will just spiral out of control.

@ChrisTurk Also with the kid you'll probably want to clip/grind the claws regularly. Best to get it used to that from the start. Pls don't declaw :(

They will still mark even when fixed.

    People say they don't.

THIS IS A LIE! DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! Some male cats mark no matter what.

As long as they are actual strays that is fine. At the very least those strays need to be fixed.

They are less likely to mark if you get them fixed while they are a kitten.

True, but some still mark no matter what.

And some female cats pick a corner to pee in no matter what.

Fixing them will lessen the chances, but does not eliminate it.

This could be a complete fluke but some will. I had a male cat when I was a child that would...do it EVERYwhere...it was horrid. I'm talking walls, table legs, chairs...etc.

It could just depend on the cat. A vet once told me that she believed getting them fixed as early as possible can help.

I had gotten my cat from a no kill shelter and he was fostered at a home. So he was taught to not do anything like that. also was taught no counters or scratch anything other then a scratching post.

K, guys. Not all male cats spray. But fixing them doesn't always stop it from happening. I got a male cat at 3 DAYS OLD. and had him fixed as soon as I could. He still marked.

I've had many other male cats who have not sprayed.

Point was, getting them fixed does not 100% solve this issue. It only solves them being able to impregnate another kitty.

I guess it depends more on the individual cat. If you're getting an adult, the shelter should be able to advise depending on their history, especially if it's been with a foster.

jumping in the kitty convo but yes yes yes plz this. clipping nails is so freaking easy and you can do it with regular nail clippers once you've got the hang of it. play with their paws constantly so they're used to having them touched and you'll end up with a meow who melts in your lap when you go to do them.
