12/07 - Thermal Thursday!

My X510 used to go through at least 1 drive a year due to heat. Added 2 fans and it still did it. Trashed the WD and Seagate drives. Dropped in 4 Hitachi 10TB and never looked back.

It's not WD's drives fault they are just sensitive to heat. Other than that they are great drives and for that price point you should jump on it.

 

Inside a desktop they will have proper cooling so it isn't really any issue.

On a side note though.. the only drive that I have ever had that failed was a hgst so

I just checked and those Deskstar NAS are $244.99 for the 8TB and and $309.00 for the 10TB so I hope that they are doing something 'better' considering that they are almost twice the price of the WDs that you can shuck.

Hi, New member person!

 

I got 4 10TB on newegg for $80 each on sale. I have had 8 Barracudas and 6 WD (blue, gold, red, purple, green, and black) die on me. Again though it was the server (X510) overheating them and not so much the drive.
