Dude he told me having a birthday party for a 16 year old girl is a joke.

 

I just don't like the whole obligated gift festivities of christmas. It's forced and fake. It's stressful too. Plus it's awkward.

A much better and kinder gesture is random gifts throughout the year. If I see something my girlfriend or parents or my sister's cat would really like- I buy it for them and give it to them when I see them. This is way more thoughtful and appreciative in my opinion

 

Sorry, but that's complete bullshit.

I do buy my adult kids stuff but I've always kept it within reason. They don't expect Switches or anything from me. One kid I just usually give cash as he always needs that and he appreciates it.

Christmas can be celebrated at any age. Someone has issues if they think it's only celebrated when you have young kids.

 

He's an idiot.

I've never had a birthday party so I can't say anything about those. At most I got a boxed cake left out for me that was half eaten if that. I can't speak on birthdays

 

*Hides his Christmas presents in shame*

In all seriousness, every year, I tell my mom we don't have to do gifts yet she insists. Then it turns into "what do you want?" "Nothing, what do you want?" "You're not getting 'nothing', but I don't want anything" and then we both get each other things and I every year she yells at me for how much I spent. My favorite part is just seeing her face light up when she opens presents. Like a parent, but in reverse lol.

 

You guys have to remember, he has teenage kids and frankly he's a loser that is broke because he hasn't made any money in probably a decade.

He doesn't say that shit because he believes it, he says it because he's disgruntled that people have and do things he wants to do. So instead of rising up to have those things he'd rather tear everyone else down like somehow they are wrong and his way is right so he can feel better.

It's mind numbing to deal with and I feel like I honestly only still talk with him because I've known him 20 years but sometimes I'd like to just move on.

 

We have always drawn names in my extended family (brothers, sisters and their families) and we set a budget for each gift. That has worked well, but now we're even moving away from that and doing our trial of "Dirty Santa" and probably going to do that going forward. For us, it's being together and the food my sister cooks. Definitely THE FOOD. We couldn't care less about gifts as long as there's ham, dressing and taters. We save the real gift giving for our immediate families.

Then we donate. This year we're donating to the local animal shelter that we rescued Phoenix from.

The only people that get gifts are my two nephews, Hubby and Daughter.

 

And also I also buy myself presents, this time of year is the best for that.

 

I'm almost 25 and my brother is 22. We still live at home, rent free thankfully, and our parents still get us presents. They bought a new house like 2 weeks ago with the deal that once we graduate college we will help pay rent. We told our parents not to give us gifts this year because a house is expensive and we didn't want them to deal with that. Oddly, my parents were less than thrilled at that idea. My mom even started crying about how Christmas won't be the same this year.

 

Thank you! I get such a strange feeling accepting gifts. Like please, don't spend money on me. I don't know how to do the whole thank you thing without feeling really strange. The whole interaction is odd and hard for me to manage.
