I had a bunch of questions once I got the ads printed out and both the researcher and his assistant who answered my last email are super friendly, prompt, and courteous in their replies. The answered the questions fully. Now I hope I don't hate myself in a couple of hours.

 

Sometimes I get really angry about wasting time on a low paying HIT and want to let it out on TV, but I tell myself I'll just let the data speak for itself. But it is definitely hard restraining myself.

 

My experience lately with university IRB's has been disgustingly pathetic. Here is a response from Northwestern University regarding a faculty member scamming mturk workers out of a long, $4 hit:

"Unfortunately, given the proposal was not human subjects research, it falls outside of the scope of the IRB’s compliance program"

This is unnacceptable and I am still in the process of pursuing this, but the hit was most certainly a study, it was called a study in the hit description, and it required actual HUMANS to respond to and rate videos on various dimensions. That is most certainly human subjects research.

if they did not get approval from IRB, there is nothing you can do. My current data set that I am dealing with is coming from Turkish Statistical Institute including human responses but I did not get any permission from Penn State.

 

I'm impressed by the comments. I would have been fuming.

 

However, I did get a switch as an early Christmas present from my brother... I think I'm going to set it up now to take my mind off this
