    Notes are allowed by default but it's not uncommon for individual judges to ban them. A few of the arguments against it are that note taking can result in jurors relying on them too heavily during deliberation, and therefore give too much weight to certain pieces of evidence (e.g. they bothered to take extensive notes during the prosecution but for the defense they neglected to take as many), or that because Juror A took notes and Juror B did not, the other jurors are likely to believe that Juror A is more correct in their interpretation (regardless of the truth of the situation). Generally though, the swing has been towards allowing notes and it's not as controversial as it once was.
